Communities with gang activity are disproportionately affected by theft, negative economic impact, vandalism, assault, gun violence, illegal drug trade, and homicide. As gang-related gun violence continues to be a leading cause of gun-related homicides, we must continue to remove those intent on causing harm from our streets while finding restorative opportunities for communities impacted by violent gang members.
The San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office Violent Criminal Enterprise Unit, working in conjunction with local law enforcement, builds successful cases every day against key criminal gang members and puts them behind bars. Most recently, a street gang member was sentenced to fifteen years in state prison for attempted murder, along with a weapons charge. Using the latest technology, Violent Criminal Enterprise Unit members, working with Stockton Police Department’s Gang Violence Suppression Unit, were able to gather evidence that at one time would have been impossible to obtain.
I am thankful for the partnership with local law enforcement and the San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors. They fully support the Violent Criminal Enterprise Unit’s mission and commitment to curbing gang violence. Last month, the Board of Supervisors approved new organized crime unit positions solely dedicated to cutting-edge investigations.
Gang violence impacts victims’ long-term health, their family, peers, and the community. Youth caught up in gang involvement are much more likely to drop out of school, succumb to drug and alcohol addiction, or be incarcerated as adults. I will continue to work with community partners, faith-based organizations and prioritize my office’s resources to eliminate gang violence in our communities while finding better pathways for our youth.
