Fentanyl, often added to other illegal street drugs without people knowing, is killing San Joaquin County residents. Nationally, overdose deaths related to fentanyl were nearly 12 times higher in 2019 compared to 2013, according to the CDC. Deaths increased another 30% in 2020, while California deaths in particular increased by over 40%.
There is no such thing as a safe street drug, and fentanyl is 50 - 100 times more potent than heroin or morphine. Sadly, the lethal consequences of this powerful narcotic are already here. The statistics are overwhelming, and we must empower parents and community members to have a conversation with our youth about the instantaneous and deadly consequences of fentanyl. Please make this discussion a priority for your family and friends today. Awareness is something we can all share.
The only way to rein in this epidemic is to suffocate national and local distribution networks. Therefore, here in San Joaquin County, my office will continue to vigorously prosecute those who manufacture, distribute, and sell narcotics, especially those who distribute to our youth.
